Mobile Research Lab

Step by step we improve our mobile lab – the Ford Transit transporter van (the name is the program) and the trailer. Inside the van we started to install a mobile exhibition, which we use as triggers for conversations. But we also use the big load capacity on our research trips to collect artifacts. The trailer we designed as s spatial grid and sub-construction in order to attach white panels which are stored – like a sketch-book – in the yellow box. During interviews on the respective site we draw large-scale live mappings on the...

Maanteemuuseum

On our trip back we re-visited the Eesti Road Museum. Already at our stopover last summer, we had been very intrigued about how artefacts related to mobility-issues are staged. This time we thankfully got a guided tour by the staff. Great, besides the ‚conventional‘ collection of vehicles, the section of where different typologies of „nodes“ are reconstructed 1:1 – like the old gas station and the little pavilion with a little garden including a sculpture. According to the information of our guide such pavilions were designed as a rest areas, located all over the...

Project Space Vienna

We finally succeeded and moved into our new project-space at the „Nord-West-Bahnof“ area. The freight station is still a very busy logistic hub. Contrary to our first assumption that, because of the transformation of the area into a mixed use development (residential/ office) the warehouses are almost empty,  it turned out that as many of the big players and forwarders moved out, lots of little businesses – like vendors, delivering and relocation services, car parts dealers etc. rented smaller lots. So did we! We now have an office space next door to some forwarding agents and a storage-lot in one of the big warehouses. In both spaces we start to set up our installations/ cartographies.      ...

New Bridge

Before we approached the ‚New Bridge‘ we made a short detour, crossed the city center of Vidin, passed by the dilapidated industrial- and harbor area.  ...

Corridor IV – E79

This time we leave Sofia northwards in the direction to Montana and Vidin, following the Corridor IV/ E79. On our way to Sofia at the Serbian border we had troubles with the customs, because we were entering the Non-EU country and didn’t obtain a Carnet ATA for the technical equipment in advance. Besides we want to experience this route the main argument for taking this route as for so many others is to avoid a long delay at the border – since we don’t have to leave the...

Sofia Workshop

Some photos of the displayed projects – including: Staging of findings from the Somat-Archive, our large scale Mapping-Book – a compilation of some nodes we focus on, a live drawn map of the lectures at the workshop, Nikola Venkov’s collaborative project on the Women’s-Market in...

Live Mapping as Method

Besides presenting „Stop and Go“ at the conference we presented our actor related mapping approach for gathering stories about routes, rituals and routines.  The first step was to depict a selection of some of the most relevant nodes along our first research trip we completed last summer: Vienna (A) – Tallinn (EST) – Svilengrad (BG) – Vienna  During the conference we gathered mobility patterns of some participants of the...

Heading for a Conference

Looking a the destination board, its evident that the Vienna Airport has established itself as a hub to (south-) eastern Europe. But this time the trip goes to Copenhagen a conference organized by the „Cosmobilities“ network. The small aircraft, a „Fokker 100“, is on duty for a lot of flights to destinations in Eastern Europe....

VIB – Arrival in Vienna

Our bus arrives this Friday as one of the first at the „Vienna International Busterminal“ (VIB) around 5 am. The counters and toilet are still closed – but the snack stand just opened for a first coffee. After picking up their luggage the passengers immediately rush to the exit. Some are awaited, but most straight head for the subway...

Promotion!

In order to keep us happy and convince us to book the same bus also for our future trips, „Air Kona“ the bus company invites every passenger for a nightly meal. At the Serbian grill room they served „Pljeskavica“ for everybody! What a ritual of...
